A weighted grade point average (WGPA) is a numerical indicator that reflects a student’s academic performance over a given period. Unlike a simple average of grades, it also takes into account the number of credits for each course—i.e., the weight of each subject in the study program.

Tabuľka na výpočet VŠP na stiahnutie >

The calculation of the weighted grade point average is regulated by Decree No. 614/2002 Coll. of the Ministry of Education of the Slovak Republic on the Credit System of Study.

The WGPA is calculated using the following formula:

WGPA = (∑ (k × z)) / (∑k)

where:

  • k = the number of credits for the course,
  • z = the numerical value of the grade (e.g., A = 1, B = 1.5, C = 2, D = 2.5, E = 3),
  • the sum is calculated over all courses completed in the given period.

The lower the WGPA, the better the academic performance.

A weighted grade point average does not include:

  • the simple arithmetic average of grades,
  • the percentage of success / the percentage representation of academic performance.

If you are studying abroad and want your weighted GPA to be recognized according to the Slovak grading system, follow these steps:

  1. Find a conversion table
    • The conversion table is provided by the academic office of your university or can usually be found on its website.
    • Using the table, determine how your university grades are converted to the ECTS system (A–FX).
  2. Request your transcript for the academic year
    • Ask your university for an official transcript for the past academic year.
    • The document must include all completed courses, their credit values, and the grades received.
  3. Calculate your weighted GPA
    • Use the conversion table to translate your grades to the Slovak grading system.
    • Then, calculate your weighted GPA according to the official table.

Attach the following documents to your application:

  • Transcript of records for the past academic year from your foreign university
  • Conversion table showing the mapping to the Slovak system
  • Completed table with the calculated weighted GPA according to Slovak grading

For all students studying at a foreign university, their studies must, according to the decision of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic (MŠVVaM SR), be comparable in scope and level to higher education in Slovakia.

List of recognized universities for the purpose of evaluating studies abroad 2025/2026

If you do not find your university on the list, it does not necessarily mean that your studies will not be considered equivalent. However, you would need to submit an individual request to the Ministry of Education for an evaluation of your studies abroad.
